William Appleton was born on November 16, 1786, in Massachusetts, the son of Reverend Joseph Appleton. He received his education at schools in New Hampshire and Massachusetts before starting work at a local store at the young age of 15. It was clear from an early age that Appleton had a strong work ethic and business acumen, as he was made a partner of the store just three years later.
Appleton moved to Boston at a young age and quickly established himself as a successful businessman. He purchased a ship and began sailing to Europe to buy and sell goods. Following the end of the War of 1812, he expanded his business endeavors even further. Appleton purchased shares of the Suffolk Bank, which propelled him to become one of the wealthiest individuals in Boston at that time.
In 1850, Appleton began his political career and won several elections as a representative for Massachusetts' first district in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was initially a member of the Whig party but later became a constitutional unionist. Appleton served as a U.S. Representative for Massachusetts from 1851 to 1855 and then again from 1861 to 1862 before resigning due to health problems.
In 1794, Appleton married Mary Ann Cutler, with whom he had nine children. Their children were named William Sullivan, James Amory, Sarah Elizabeth, Francis Henry, William Joseph, Edward H., Harriet Cutler, Hetty Sullivan, and Charles Hook Appleton. Appleton's family connections were notable, as he was the first cousin of U.S. Representative Nathan Appleton and writer and artist Thomas Gold Appleton.
Appleton was known for his generosity and philanthropic efforts. He made significant donations to various causes, including the Massachusetts General Hospital, where he had served as president. His dedication to giving back to his community and supporting important institutions left a lasting impact on Boston and beyond.
William Appleton passed away shortly after resigning from his political position, at the age of 75. His legacy as a successful businessman, dedicated public servant, and generous philanthropist lives on through his family, contributions to society, and impact on the city of Boston.
