Early Life
Born Juaquin Malphurs on May 31, 1986, in New York City, NY, Waka Flocka Flame grew up surrounded by music. His mother, Debra Antney, was a music industry executive, and his uncle was a well-known music producer. It was no surprise that Waka developed a passion for music at a young age.
Growing up in a rough neighborhood, Waka found solace in music. He used his music as an escape from the struggles of his surroundings, and it soon became clear that he had a talent that couldn't be ignored.
Musical Beginnings
Waka's cousin gave him the nickname "Waka" after the catchphrase of the Muppets character, Fozzie Bear. This nickname would later become his stage name. In the early 2000s, Waka began to pursue a career in music, using his experiences and struggles as inspiration for his lyrics.
In 2010, Waka released his debut album, Flockaveli, which quickly gained attention for its gritty lyrics and intense beats. The album featured hit singles like "Hard in da Paint" and "No Hands," both of which solidified Waka's place in the rap scene.
Family and Tragedy
Waka comes from a musical family. His brothers, KayO Redd and Wooh Da Kid, also pursued careers in rap. Tragically, KayO Redd passed away in 2013, leaving Waka and his family devastated. Despite the loss, Waka continued to push forward, using his music as a form of therapy.
In 2014, Waka married his longtime girlfriend, Tammy Rivera, who is a well-known TV personality. The couple has been through their fair share of ups and downs, but they have remained strong in their commitment to each other.
Success and Collaboration
Waka's success didn't stop with his debut album. His second studio album, Triple F Life: Friends, Fans & Family, was released in 2012 and also debuted in the top 10 on the US charts. The album featured collaborations with other artists, including Nicki Minaj on the single "Get Low."
