Vitali Klitschko was born on July 19, 1971, in Belovodsk, Kyrgyzstan, which was then part of the Soviet Union. He came from a family of athletes, as his father was a Soviet Air Force colonel and his mother was a teacher of language. The family moved to Ukraine when Vitali was a young boy, and it was there that he discovered his love for combat sports.
Before becoming a professional boxer, Vitali Klitschko first made a name for himself as an amateur kickboxer. In 1992, he suffered a devastating knockout loss after being hit with a spin kick to the jaw. This defeat only fueled his desire to improve and succeed in combat sports.
Vitali Klitschko made his professional boxing debut in 1996 and quickly rose through the ranks. Klitschko is known for his close friendship with chess champion Vladimir Kramnik and his interest in furthering his education, as he became the first professional boxing world champion to hold a PhD degree.
