Viola Amherd was born on July 6, 1962, in Switzerland. She grew up in a politically active family and was influenced by her parents' commitment to public service. She attended the latin grammar school at the college in Brig and graduated in 1982. Following her passion for law, she went on to study jurisprudence at the University of Fribourg from 1982 to 1987.
After completing her studies, Viola Amherd embarked on a career as a self-employed lawyer and notary in Brig-Glis in 1991. She quickly built a reputation for her dedication to her clients and her commitment to upholding the law.
Viola Amherd's political career began when she joined the Christian Democratic People's Party. She served as a member of the party until 2021 when it merged with the Conservative Democratic Party to form The Centre. Her dedication to her work and her community soon caught the attention of her peers, and in 2019, she was elected to the Swiss Federal Council.
Viola Amherd's appointment to the Swiss Federal Council in 2019 marked a significant milestone in her political career. In December 2022, she was elected Vice-President of the Federal Council for the year 2023.

Following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, she took a stand by writing to International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, urging the IOC to suspend officials from Russia and Belarus.
