Vince Dooley was born on April 4, 1932, in Mobile, Alabama. He attended Auburn University, where he played quarterback for the Auburn Tigers from 1951 to 1953. After graduating from Auburn, Dooley served as an infantry officer in the US Marine Corps.
Dooley began his coaching career as an assistant coach at the University of Alabama under legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. In 1964, he was named the head football coach at the University of Georgia, a position he would hold for the next 25 years. During his tenure at Georgia, Dooley led the Bulldogs to six SEC championships and a National Championship in 1980.
