Viktor Tikhonov was born on December 5, 1988 in Riga, Russia. He spent his early years in Russia before moving to the United States with his family. Growing up, Tikhonov split his time between Los Gatos, California and Lexington, Kentucky, where his father Vasily worked as the goaltender coach for the Kentucky Thoroughblades, the AHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks.
As a young hockey player, Tikhonov quickly made a name for himself with his impressive skills on the ice. He was selected 28th overall in the 2008 NHL Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes and spent the 2008-09 season playing with the team. After his stint in Phoenix, Tikhonov joined the Russian team SKA Saint Petersburg, where he played for four years before signing with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015.
