Verl Tom Lillywhite was born on May 12, 1926, in the quiet town of Utah. He was the son of LeRoi and Cleopha Lillywhite, and grew up alongside his brother Roy and sister Daryl. From a young age, Verl showed a natural talent for sports, excelling in football and track and field.
After graduating from high school, Verl attended Modesto Junior College before transferring to the University of Southern California. It was at USC where he earned his bachelor's degree in marketing and later went on to pursue a master's degree from the Los Angeles State College of Applied Arts and Sciences.
Verl's football career truly took off when he was drafted to play as a halfback for the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL in 1948. He quickly became a fan favorite, known for his speed, agility, and natural talent on the field. During his time with the 49ers, Verl played alongside legends such as Frankie Albert and Joe Perry.
However, Verl's football career was put on hold when he was called to serve in the Korean War. He bravely served in the United States Navy until he was honorably discharged in 1960.
After retiring from professional football, Verl found a new calling in education. He became a teacher, coach, and athletic director at Burroughs High School in Ridgecrest, CA. For over 21 years, Verl dedicated his time and energy to shaping the lives of young athletes and students.
Verl's impact extended beyond the classroom, as he was known for his leadership, mentorship, and dedication to his community. His passion for sports and education inspired generations of students and athletes.
Verl was not only a dedicated educator and coach but also a loving husband and father. He was married to his wife Ronnie for 25 years until his passing in 2007. Together, they raised their three sons, Michael, Jim, and Jeff Lillywhite, as well as several stepchildren.
Verl was a beloved grandfather to 20 grandchildren at the time of his death, leaving behind a legacy of love, guidance, and inspiration.
