Valeria Silva was born in Lima, Peru to parents Javier and Luisa Silva, both of whom were competitive volleyball players. From a young age, Valeria showed a passion for swimming and began training at the local swimming club, Club Regatas de Lima, at the age of five. She continued to excel in the sport throughout her childhood and competed on the swim team in high school.
After graduating from high school, Valeria was awarded a scholarship to train in Australia, where she honed her skills for one year before deciding to move to the United States in 2004. She pursued her academic ambitions alongside her athletic career, obtaining medical degrees from the University of Michigan and Columbia University.
Valeria's athletic career reached new heights when she competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
