Tyler Ulis, born on May 1, 1996 in Southfield, Michigan, was raised by his parents James Ulis and Kelly Reed. He grew up in a household with four brothers, and his cousin, Travis Walton, was a standout basketball player who was named Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2009.
Ulis began his basketball journey in Matteson, Illinois where he attended Marian Catholic High School. He quickly made a name for himself as a standout point guard, leading his team to multiple successful seasons. Ulis was rated as a five-star recruit by both Scout and Rivals, and his skills on the court earned him a spot in prestigious high school All-Star games such as the McDonald's All-American and Jordan Brand Classic.
In 2014, Ulis made the decision to take his talents to the University of Kentucky to play for the Wildcats. As a freshman, he played a crucial role in helping the team reach the 2015 Final Four.
