Tunahan Kuzu is a Dutch politician who has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2012. Born on May 5, 1981 in Istanbul, Turkey, he moved to Maasluis, Netherlands at a young age and grew up there. Kuzu earned a degree in public administration from Erasmus University Rotterdam and went on to become a health advisor for PricewaterhouseCoopers.
His political career began in 2008 when he served a four-year term as a member of the municipal council of Rotterdam. Kuzu was an active member of the Labour Party until 2014 when he, along with fellow politician Selçuk Öztürk, left to form a new party called DENK ("Think"). He became the Parliamentary group leader of DENK that same year.
In 2017, DENK made history by acquiring 3 seats in the House of Representatives, becoming the first minority-founded party to secure seats in the Dutch national parliament. This was a significant achievement for Kuzu and his party.
Kuzu gained international attention in 2016 when he wore a pin of the Palestinian flag on his jacket and refused to shake hands with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the States General of the Netherlands. He later clarified that his actions were a form of protest against the treatment of Palestinian civilians under Israeli rule.
His decision to leave the Labour Party and co-found DENK was influenced by proposals from Deputy Prime Minister and party leader Lodewijk Asscher. The move was a strategic decision to better represent the interests of minority communities in the Netherlands.
Another notable member of DENK was politician and television personality Sylvana Simons, who joined the party but later left in 2016 to establish her own political party called BIJ1. Kuzu's leadership in DENK has been marked by a commitment to advocating for the rights and representation of marginalized communities in Dutch politics.
Tunahan Kuzu's journey from a health advisor to a prominent political figure in the Netherlands showcases his dedication to serving his community and fighting for social justice. His role in founding DENK and leading the party to success in the House of Representatives has solidified his position as a key player in Dutch politics.
As he continues to advocate for the rights of minorities and push for progressive policies, Kuzu remains a figure to watch in the political landscape of the Netherlands. His passion for social change and commitment to equality serve as a driving force in his work as a politician.
