Toru Kumon was born on March 26, 1914, in Osaka, Japan. With the success of his method evident in his son's remarkable achievements in mathematics, Kumon decided to share his approach with the world. In 1958, he founded the Kumon Institute of Education, which aimed to provide personalized learning programs for students of all ages. This marked the beginning of the widespread opening of Kumon Centers around the globe.
Kumon's methods quickly gained popularity and success, leading to the establishment of the Toru Kumon Museum in his hometown of Osaka, Japan. In honor of his contributions to education, October 20th was dedicated as Kumon Foundation Day, commemorating the official anniversary of the institute's founding. Additionally, Asteroid 3569 Kumon was named after him, acknowledging his lasting impact on the field of education.
Toru Kumon was married to Teiko Kumon, and together they had a son named Takeshi. It was Teiko's encouragement after Takeshi's struggles with mathematics that inspired Kumon to develop his groundbreaking educational method. Through daily handwritten worksheets and personalized instruction, he helped his son excel in mathematics, laying the foundation for the Kumon Method.
Alongside his work in education, Kumon made significant contributions to the field of mathematics during the 20th century. His focus on individualized learning and tailored instruction resonated with mathematicians such as Lotfi A. Zadeh and Paul Erdos, who also emphasized the importance of personalized approaches to learning.
