Tom Ballard was born in England on October 16, 1988, to parents Jim Ballard and Alison Hargreaves. He grew up with a passion for adventure and the great outdoors, influenced by his mother who was also a renowned climber.
From a young age, Tom showed a natural talent for climbing. In 2009, he made a name for himself by climbing a new rock route on the Eiger, which he named "Seven Pillars of Wisdom." This achievement marked the beginning of his impressive climbing career.
Tom's fearless and adventurous spirit led him to push the limits of his climbing abilities. In 2016, he established a new 26-pitch rock climb called "Dirty Harry" on the northwest face of Civetta and a new mixed route named "Titanic" on the north face of the Eiger. He ventured into famous mountain ranges such as the Dolomites, Alps, and Himalayas, seeking out new challenges and adventures.
Tom Ballard will always be remembered as a pioneer in the world of rock climbing and alpinism. He made history by becoming the first mountaineer to climb the six major alpine north faces solo in a single winter season from December 2014 to March 2015. His incredible feats inspired countless climbers around the world.
In February 2019, Tom Ballard embarked on an expedition to Nanga Parbat, one of the world's most challenging mountains. Tragically, he disappeared during the climb, leading to a frantic search and rescue operation. His body was eventually discovered on the mountain's Mummery Spur on March 9, 2019, bringing an end to a remarkable life cut short.
