Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson was born on January 21, 1824 in Clarksburg, West Virginia to Julia Beckwith and Jonathan Jackson. His father died when he was just a young boy, leaving Jackson and his siblings to be raised by their mother. Jackson had a challenging upbringing, but he found solace in his studies and in working at his uncle's grist mill during his early years.
After attending the United States Military Academy at West Point, Jackson went on to serve in the Mexican-American War where he earned a reputation for his military leadership and strategic thinking. It was during this time that he first caught the eye of fellow officer Robert E. Lee.
It was during the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861 that Jackson received his famous nickname, "Stonewall." Jackson's defense of Henry House Hill earned him praise and admiration from both his allies and enemies.
During the Civil War, Jackson served as a Confederate commander alongside Robert E. Lee and James Longstreet. His military strategies and leadership played a crucial role in many Confederate victories, including the Battle of Chancellorsville where he outmaneuvered and defeated a much larger Union army.
After his death in 1863, Stonewall Jackson became an icon of heroism and tactical ingenuity.
