Born Brian Elwin Haner Jr. on July 7, 1981 in Huntington Beach, California, Synyster Gates showed an early interest in music. He grew up surrounded by music, as his father, Brian Haner Sr., is a successful session musician who has worked with artists such as Frank Zappa and Tower of Power.
Gates attended the renowned Musicians Institute in Hollywood, where he honed his skills as a guitarist. It was during his time at MI that he met future bandmate Zacky Vengeance, with whom he would go on to form Avenged Sevenfold.
