Stewart Alexander was born on January 10, 1951, in Newport News, Virginia, to nurse Ann McClenney and minister Stewart Alexander Sr. Growing up in Virginia, he was raised with a strong sense of community and values of social justice.
After serving in the United States Air Force Reserve, Alexander worked as a grocery clerk before deciding to pursue higher education. He made the bold decision to leave his hometown and move to the west coast to attend California State University, Dominguez Hills. It was during his time at university that Alexander's interest in politics and social issues began to take shape.
Throughout his career, Alexander has been affiliated with several political parties, including the Peace & Freedom, Green, and Socialist USA parties. His early involvement in politics led him to participate in various grassroots movements and community organizing efforts.
Alexander ran for Mayor of Los Angeles in 1989, Lieutenant Governor of California in 2006, Vice President of the United States in 2008, and President of the United States in 2012. Although he was not successful in winning these elections, his campaigns sparked important conversations about social justice and equality.
Alexander has been married twice, first to Freda Alexander, with whom he has a son, and secondly to another partner with whom he has a stepchild. Family has always been an important aspect of his life, and he credits his upbringing for instilling in him the values that have guided his political career.
Aside from his political campaigns, Alexander has been actively involved in the community, particularly in the Los Angeles chapter of the NAACP. In the late 1980s, he hosted a popular radio talk show focused on social issues, further cementing his role as a voice for the marginalized and underserved.
