Stephen Nathan Kinnock was born on January 1, 1970, in Wales. He comes from a well-known political family, as his parents are Glenys Kinnock, a former European Minister of State, and Neil Kinnock, a former British Parliament Member and President of the European Commission. Kinnock also has a sister named Rachel.
He attended Queens' College Cambridge, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree. He then furthered his education by obtaining a master of arts degree from the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium in 1993.
After completing his education, Kinnock began his career as a research assistant for the Brussels European Parliament. He later worked as an executive in Development and Training Services for the British Council before becoming the director of the World Economic Forum in 2009.
In 2015, Kinnock entered politics by becoming a British Parliament Member, representing Aberavon. Throughout his political career, he has been a member of the Labour Party and has held various government positions. He has served as the Parliamentary Private Secretary of the Shadow Business, Innovation and Skills team, Shadow Asia and Pacific Minister, and Shadow Armed Forces Minister.
In 2020, Kinnock was appointed as the Shadow Asia and Pacific Minister in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office by Labour Party leader Keir Starmer. In 2022, he took over the position of Shadow Immigration Minister in the Home Office after the role's former incumbent, Jack Dromey, passed away suddenly.
Kinnock has been actively involved in various advocacy efforts throughout his political career. He has spearheaded campaigns demanding justice for the victims of the 2021 Skewen mine shaft flood and has called for government support of the steel industry. Additionally, he has advocated for Britain's prioritization of floating off-shore wind as a clean and domestic energy source.
Kinnock married former Denmark Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, whom he met while attending the College of Europe. They have two children - freelance journalist and podcaster Johanna, and Milo, who came out as non-binary and began using the pronouns he/him in 2022.
In 2017, Kinnock was featured in the BBC2 documentary "Labour: The Summer that Changed Everything." The documentary followed several Labour Party Members of the British Parliament for over 6 months throughout and after the 2017 UK general election. Kinnock was one of four MPs in the documentary who particularly disapproved of the Labour Party leader at the time, Jeremy Corbyn.
A clip from the documentary in which Kinnock received critical advice from his wife following the election exit poll went viral after the documentary's release, with many viewers praising her quick judgment under pivotal circumstances.
