Scott Monroe Sterling, better known by his stage name Scott La Rock, was born on February 3, 1962 in New York City, NY. Growing up in the Bronx borough, he was the son of city employee Carolyn Morant. From a young age, Scott showed a passion for music and entertainment.
After graduating high school, Scott attended Castleton State College in Vermont, where he also played basketball. It was during his time in college that he discovered his love for DJing. Scott worked a side job as a DJ at a local bar on Friday nights, honing his skills and building his reputation in the local music scene.
Upon graduating from college, Scott returned to New York City and began working as a social worker during the day. However, his true passion lay in music, and he continued to DJ at night, often spinning records at local clubs and parties.
In 1986, Scott, along with fellow DJs D-Nice Jones and rapper KRS-One, founded the iconic hip-hop group Boogie Down Productions. Their debut album, "Criminal Minded," was released in 1987 and quickly became a classic in the hip-hop genre. Scott's production skills and DJing talent were instrumental in the success of the group.
Tragically, Scott La Rock's life was cut short when he was shot and killed at the young age of twenty-five. His untimely death not only shook the hip-hop community but also fueled the creation of the Stop the Violence Movement, an initiative led by rap artists to combat violence in inner-city communities.
Scott La Rock fathered one child, Scott Sterling, Jr., who would go on to carry on his father's musical legacy. Despite his short life, Scott's impact on the hip-hop world continues to be felt to this day.
Scott La Rock may have left us too soon, but his contributions to hip-hop music and culture live on. His work with Boogie Down Productions and his dedication to his craft will always be remembered by fans and fellow artists alike.
