Sam LaPorta was born and raised in Illinois, the son of Joseph and Staci LaPorta. Growing up in a sports-oriented family, he was always surrounded by athleticism and competition. LaPorta discovered his love for football at a young age and began playing organized football in his elementary school years.

At the University of Iowa, LaPorta made the transition from wide receiver to tight end.
