Ron Rolston was born on October 14, 1966, in Michigan. Growing up, he developed a passion for hockey which would later shape his career. He played three years of hockey at Michigan Technological University, honing his skills and preparing for a future in the sport.
Rolston's coaching career took off when he was appointed as the head coach of the Rochester Americans, the affiliate team of the Buffalo Sabres, in 2011. His success with the Americans caught the attention of the Sabres organization, leading to his promotion as the head coach of the Buffalo Sabres in 2013. Rolston took over the team during the middle of the 2012-13 season, replacing the long-time coach Lindy Ruff.
As the head coach of the Buffalo Sabres, Rolston faced both success and challenges. He had the opportunity to coach All-Star winger Thomas Vanek and lead the team through various highs and lows.
