It was during his time at Stalag Luft III that Bushell organized and led one of the most daring escape attempts in military history. On the night of March 24, 1944, Bushell and 75 others made their bid for freedom, although not all of them would ultimately succeed.
The escape would later be immortalized in the film The Great Escape, with Bushell being portrayed by Richard Attenborough under the slightly altered name of Roger Bushell. The movie captured the drama and bravery of the real-life events, but nothing could truly do justice to the courage and sacrifice shown by Bushell and his comrades.
