Richard Henry Lee was born on January 20, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Lee and Hannah Harrison Ludwell Lee, both prominent members of Virginia's colonial aristocracy. From a young age, Lee was exposed to the political and social circles of Virginia's elite.
Lee received his early education from private tutors and later attended the College of William and Mary. After completing his studies, he returned to Westmoreland County, where he began his career in public service as a Justice of the Peace.
