He was the son of Fernand Auberjonois, a well-known Swiss-born Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, and Princess Laure Louise Napoléone Eugénie Caroline Murat, a descendant of the famous Napoleonic Marshal Joachim Murat. From a young age, Auberjonois was exposed to the worlds of acting and journalism, as his parents were both prominent figures in their respective fields.
Despite his family's prestigious background, Auberjonois decided to pursue a career in acting from a young age. At just six years old, he knew that he wanted to be an actor after playing the role of conductor in his class performance.
