After completing high school, Raef attended the University of Maryland, where he pursued a degree in computer science. During his time at university, he also became involved in music, singing tenor in a comedic a cappella group.
Following his studies, Raef worked in the technology sector, developing security software for the New York Stock Exchange. However, in 2005, he shifted gears and began a career in education, working as a high school teacher until 2013.
