Pops Staples, born Roebuck Staples on December 28, 1914, in Winona, Mississippi, was the youngest of fourteen children growing up on a cotton plantation. Music was always a part of his life, as he sang in church and learned to play the guitar from an early age.
In the 1940s, Pops formed a family gospel singing group with his children Cleotha, Mavis, Yvonne, and Pervis. They quickly gained popularity in the community, blending gospel music with soulful rhythms that would later define their sound.
The Staple Singers' breakthrough came in the 1960s when they signed with Stax Records and began recording hits like "I'll Take You There" and "Respect Yourself". Pops' distinctive guitar playing and soulful vocals set them apart in the R&B world, earning them a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.
Despite the success of The Staple Singers, Pops also had a thriving solo career. In 1994, he won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album for his release "Father Father". His solo work showcased his versatility as an artist and further solidified his place in music history.
Pops Staples worked with a variety of artists throughout his career, including a memorable duet with Willie Nelson in the film "Wag the Dog". His ability to blend genres and collaborate with artists outside of the R&B world showcased his talent and versatility as a musician.
