Pierre Nkurunziza was born on December 18, 1964, in the bustling capital city of Bujumbura, Burundi. Raised in the province of Ngozi in Northern Burundi, he grew up in a politically charged environment. After completing his secondary education, Nkurunziza went on to attend the Institut d'Education Physique et des Sports at the University of Burundi. In 1990, he earned his degree in sports education and began his career as a professor at Lycee de Muramvya. It was during his time as a teacher that Nkurunziza's interest in politics began to grow.
Nkurunziza's foray into politics began when he joined the National Council for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD) party. He quickly rose through the ranks and in 1998, he was appointed as the Deputy Secretary-General for the CNDD-FDD. His dedication to the party and his passion for serving the people of Burundi did not go unnoticed, and in 2005, Nkurunziza was elected as the President of Burundi.
During his time in office, Nkurunziza worked tirelessly to promote peace, stability, and development in Burundi. He was recognized for his efforts with several prestigious awards, including the Prix Pour la Paix in 2006 and the Oscar de Paix Award in 2007.

The situation escalated to the point where Nkurunziza was forced to engage in negotiations with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.
