Perry Edward Smith was born on October 27, 1928, in Nevada. He was the son of professional rodeo performers Tex Smith and Flo Buckskin. His upbringing was far from stable, as he and his three siblings lived in an orphanage for part of their childhood. The family moved around quite a bit, spending time in Nevada, Alaska, and California.
After a brief stint in the United States Merchant Marine, Perry joined the United States Army and fought in the Korean War. It was during his time in the military that he began to show signs of a troubled past, struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues.
Perry's criminal career reached its peak in 1959 when he and his accomplice, Richard Hickock, committed a gruesome home invasion in Holcomb, Kansas. The pair robbed and murdered Herbert, Kenyon, Bonnie, and Nancy Clutter in what would later be immortalized in Truman Capote's book, In Cold Blood.
