Oleg Dmitriyevich Kononenko was born on June 21, 1964 in Chardzhou, Turkmen SSR, Soviet Union (now Turkmenistan). He developed a passion for space exploration at a young age and dreamed of becoming an astronaut. After graduating from high school, Kononenko pursued a degree in mechanical engineering at the Chelyabinsk State Technical University.
