In September 1986, Neerja's life took a tragic turn when Pan Am Flight 73 was hijacked by terrorists in Karachi, Pakistan. Despite facing danger and uncertainty, Neerja remained calm and composed, putting the safety of the passengers above her own.

During the hijacking, Neerja displayed remarkable bravery and selflessness. She helped passengers escape through emergency exits, hid passports to protect them from the terrorists, and even managed to alert the cockpit crew before being shot and killed while shielding three children from gunfire.

Legacy

Neerja's actions on that fateful day saved the lives of over 350 passengers and crew members. Her sacrifice did not go unnoticed, and she was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award, for her extraordinary courage.

After her death, Neerja's brother, Aneesha, published a tribute book titled The Neerja I Knew, which showcased her life and legacy. In 2016, her story was brought to the big screen in the biographical thriller "Neerja," with actress Sonam Kapoor portraying her bravery and heroism.
