Nathan Kirby was born on February 15, 1994, in Midlothian, Virginia. Growing up, he lived with his parents and two brothers, Micheal and Josh. From a young age, Kirby showed a natural talent for baseball and began honing his skills in his hometown.
After graduating from high school, Kirby went on to attend the University of Virginia (UVA) where he played collegiate baseball. During his time at UVA, Kirby made a name for himself as a standout pitcher, earning multiple accolades including being named a member of the first team All-ACC, an All-American, and ACC Pitcher of the Year.
One of the standout moments of Kirby's college career came on April 4, 2014, when he pitched a no-hitter against the University of Pittsburgh Panthers. In that game, Kirby recorded 18 strikeouts, a career high for him.
In the 2015 MLB Draft, Kirby was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers, marking the beginning of his professional baseball career. He started out playing for the Brewers' single-A affiliate team, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. However, his season was cut short due to Tommy John surgery after only five games with the Timber Rattlers.
In July 2021, Kirby was acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates via trade, providing him with a new opportunity to showcase his pitching skills at the professional level.
