Mutulu Shakur, born on August 8, 1950 in Baltimore, Maryland, was a prominent activist and celebrity family member known for being the stepfather of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur. He grew up in a politically active household and was exposed to the civil rights movements of the 1960s from a young age.
In his late teens, Mutulu became involved with the radical Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM), a Black nationalist group that sought to address issues of racial inequality and police brutality. He quickly rose in the ranks of the organization and became a vocal advocate for the rights of the Black community.
During the 1970s, Mutulu joined the Black Liberation Army, a militant group that operated as an underground movement seeking to combat systemic racism and oppression. He was known for his activism in promoting social justice and advocating for Black empowerment.
In 1981, Mutulu was convicted of armed robbery and sentenced to prison. Despite his incarceration, he continued to be a vocal champion for the rights of marginalized communities and fought for systemic change within the criminal justice system.
While in prison, Mutulu pursued education and certification in acupuncture, becoming licensed to practice the alternative medicine in the late 1970s. He went on to establish the Black Acupuncture Advisory Association of North America and served as its director, promoting the healing benefits of acupuncture within the Black community.
Mutulu was married to Afeni Shakur from 1975 to 1982, during which time he played a significant role in the upbringing of her son, Tupac Shakur. He formed a close bond with Tupac and influenced his stepson's views on activism and social justice.
Mutulu Shakur's contributions to the Black liberation movement and his dedication to fighting for justice have left a lasting impact on generations to come. He was a fearless advocate for equality and empowerment, and his legacy continues to inspire activists around the world.
Mutulu Shakur passed away from bone marrow cancer at the age of 72, leaving behind a legacy of activism and social change that will be remembered for years to come.
