Mike Gordon, born on March 3, 1965, in Sudbury, Massachusetts, discovered his love for music at a young age. Growing up in a creative household, his mother Marjorie Minkin, an abstract painter, and his father Robert Gordon, founder of the New England convenience store chain Store 24, encouraged his artistic pursuits. Gordon was exposed to a variety of musical genres, including bluegrass, calypso, and traditional Jewish songs, which would later influence his music career.
While attending the University of Vermont in the mid-1980s, Gordon met Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, and Jeff Holdsworth. The four musicians shared a passion for improvisational music and decided to form a band. In 1983, Phish was born, with Gordon taking on the role of bassist. The band quickly gained a following for their unique blend of rock, jazz, and funk, as well as their legendary live performances.
