Mike Bettes was born on January 19, 1972, in Tallmadge, Ohio. From a young age, he was fascinated by the weather and knew he wanted to pursue a career in meteorology. He attended Ohio State University, where he earned his Bachelor's of Science degree in atmospheric sciences. After graduating in 1998, Bettes began his professional career as the chief meteorologist for the local ABC affiliate WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina.
During his time at WLOS, Bettes gained valuable experience in forecasting and reporting on severe weather events. His passion for meteorology and his dedication to providing accurate and timely weather updates quickly caught the attention of The Weather Channel. In 2003, Bettes accepted a position with the network as a meteorologist and storm chaser.
