Meriwether Lewis was born on August 18, 1774, in Virginia, to Lt. William Lewis and Lucy Meriweather. His father passed away from pneumonia when he was just a child, leaving him to be raised by his mother. Despite this tragedy, Lewis showed an early interest in exploration and adventure, spending much of his youth exploring the wilderness near his home.
One of the most significant events in Lewis's life was the Louisiana Purchase. In 1803, Napoleon Bonaparte sold a vast amount of land to the United States, doubling the size of the country.
