Matthew Martinez was born on February 14, 1929, in Colorado. He was raised in Los Angeles, California, where he attended Theodore Roosevelt High School. After graduating, Martinez enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he achieved the rank of private first class.
Before making a name for himself in national politics, Martinez served as Mayor of Monterey Park, California. He then went on to win a seat in the California State Assembly, where he made a name for himself as a dedicated and hardworking public servant.
In a surprising move, Martinez decided to switch his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican in 2001. This decision came after he lost the 2000 California Democratic U.S. Senate primary to Hilda Solis. Martinez believed that the Republican Party better aligned with his values and beliefs.
From 1982 to 2001, Martinez served the people of California's 30th and 31st districts in the United States House of Representatives. During his time in Congress, Martinez sat on several important committees, including Human Resources, Employment Opportunities, Foreign Affairs, and Education and Labor. He was known for his dedication to improving the lives of his constituents through his legislative work.
Outside of his political career, Martinez was a devoted family man. He married Elvira Yorba Martinez and together, they raised five children: daughters Carol Ann, Diane, and Susan, and sons Matthew and Michael. Martinez's family was his biggest source of support and inspiration throughout his political career.
After retiring from politics, Martinez continued to be involved in his community, advocating for causes he believed in and mentoring young leaders. He passed away on June 15, 2011, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication to the people of California.
