Matthew Axelson was born on June 25, 1976, in Cupertino, California, to his parents Cordell and Donna Axelson. Growing up in a supportive and loving family, Axelson developed a passion for serving his country from a young age. After graduating from California State University- Chico with a bachelor's degree in political science, Axelson made the pivotal decision to join the United States Navy. Following his training, he became a member of the elite Navy SEALs, a special operations force highly regarded for their courage and skill.
Axelson's dedication to the Navy led him to deploy to Afghanistan as part of SEAL Team 10. In 2003, he married his beloved wife Cindy Oji, who supported him throughout his military career. One of Axelson's most notable missions was Operation Red Wings, a military initiative in the War of Afghanistan aimed at capturing or killing Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. Axelson and his fellow SEALs, including Marcus Luttrell, embarked on a dangerous mission deep in enemy territory.
Tragically, during the operation, Axelson and his team were ambushed by Taliban forces, leading to a fierce battle in which Axelson displayed exceptional bravery and valor. Despite sustaining severe injuries, he continued to fight until his last breath, refusing to abandon his comrades.
