Matt Halpern was born on June 21, 1983, in Baltimore, Maryland. From a young age, he showed a natural talent for music, picking up drumsticks for the first time when he was just 3 years old. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, he honed his skills by playing locally in middle school and regionally during high school.
Before making a name for himself in the progressive metal scene, Halpern was playing for a pop band. It wasn't until he was scouted by Misha Mansoor for Periphery that his career took off. In 2009, he joined the band as a replacement for drummer Travis Orbin.
As a member of Periphery, Halpern has had the opportunity to perform alongside talented musicians such as Mark Holcomb. In addition to his work with Periphery, he also plays with the band Sotelo, founded by fellow Periphery bandmate Spencer Sotelo.
Aside from his work as a drummer, Halpern is also the founder of Band Happy. This platform provides online music lessons and workshops, connecting aspiring musicians with industry professionals.
Outside of his music career, Halpern enjoys spending time with his family. He was raised with a sister named Jax and has a beloved dog named Tyson, who often makes appearances on his Instagram.
