Maryam Zaree was born on July 22, 1983, in the notorious Evin prison in Tehran, Iran. Her mother, Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg, was a political prisoner at the time, and Maryam spent the first two years of her life in the confines of the prison. Eventually, her mother fled with her to Frankfurt, Germany, seeking asylum and a better life.
