Luis Guillermo Solis Rivera was born on April 25, 1958, in San Jose, Costa Rica. He grew up in a middle-class family and was raised with a strong sense of social justice and equality. Solis attended the University of Costa Rica, where he studied history and developed a passion for understanding the complexities of Latin American politics and society.
After completing his undergraduate degree, Solis pursued further studies at Tulane University, where he obtained an advanced degree in Latin American Studies. He also spent time at the University of Michigan as a Fulbright Scholar, deepening his knowledge of international relations and political economy.
Solis began his political career as a member of the National Liberation Party, one of Costa Rica's traditional political parties. However, he eventually grew disillusioned with the party's policies and leadership, leading him to switch his allegiance to the Citizens' Action Party.
In 2014, Solis ran for president as the candidate of the Citizens' Action Party. He campaigned on a platform of promoting economic development, fighting political corruption, and reducing income inequality in Costa Rica. His message resonated with voters, and he was elected as the country's President in a landslide victory.
As President, Solis focused on implementing policies that would benefit the most vulnerable segments of society. He prioritized education, healthcare, and social welfare programs, aiming to create a more inclusive and equitable society. Solis also worked to strengthen Costa Rica's economy, attracting foreign investment and promoting sustainable development practices.
One of Solis's most notable achievements during his presidency was his efforts to combat climate change and protect the environment. He championed renewable energy initiatives and took steps to preserve Costa Rica's natural resources, earning praise from environmental activists and organizations around the world.
Outside of politics, Solis is a devoted family man. He is married to María Mercedes Peñas Domingo, and together they have six children. Solis values family time and tries to maintain a balance between his personal and professional responsibilities.
Throughout his career, Solis has been known for his humility, integrity, and commitment to public service. He is widely respected for his dedication to the well-being of the Costa Rican people and his efforts to create a more just and prosperous society for all.
After serving a single term as President, Solis stepped down from office in 2018. He continues to be involved in public life, advocating for social justice, environmental protection, and democracy in Costa Rica and beyond.
