On November 18, 1978, tragedy struck when Ryan and his team were ambushed and attacked by members of the Peoples Temple. The brutal assault resulted in Ryan becoming the first U.S. Member of Congress to be killed in the line of duty. The attack occurred just days before the infamous Jonestown Massacre, in which over 900 Temple members took their own lives.
