Despite societal pressures and the lack of support from her family, she knew deep down that she was a girl.
Leelah grew up in a highly religious family, attending Cincinnati's Northeast Church of Christ. Her parents, Doug and Carla Alcorn, refused to accept her transgender identity, causing immense emotional turmoil for Leelah. Despite their disapproval, she continued to fight for her true self.
At the age of 16, Leelah mustered up the courage to ask her parents for permission to medically transition from male to female. However, instead of supporting her, they forced her to undergo harmful conversion therapy. This traumatic experience only deepened Leelah's sense of isolation and despair.
