Laurent-Désiré Kabila was born on November 27, 1939, in what was then the Belgian Congo, now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He grew up in a tumultuous time in the country's history, with the struggle for independence from Belgian colonial rule gaining momentum.

Kabila's political career began in the 1960s when he founded the People's Revolutionary Party, advocating for Marxist ideals and the overthrow of the existing government. He led a secessionist movement in South Kivu province, establishing a Marxist state that lasted until 1988.
His revolutionary activities caught the attention of Che Guevara, the legendary guerrilla leader, who briefly worked with Kabila during his time in the Congo in 1965. This experience further fueled Kabila's ambition and commitment to revolutionary change.
In 1997, Kabila rose to power as the President of the DRC, following years of political upheaval and conflict in the region. He played a prominent role in the First Congo War, where he led Tutsi forces against Hutus, further solidifying his reputation as a decisive and ruthless leader.
However, his presidency was short-lived, as he was assassinated in 2001 by one of his own bodyguards. His death shocked the nation and marked the end of an era in Congolese politics.
