Before delving into the realm of criminal activities, Keith Raniere attempted to establish himself in the business world. In 1998, he founded a multi-level marketing company called Consumers' Buyline Inc. Unfortunately, this venture, like many of his other business endeavors, was unsuccessful. Keith also owned the National Health Network, but it too failed to gain traction.
It was in the late 1990s that Keith Raniere founded what would become one of the most infamous cults in modern history - NXIVM. Operating under the guise of a self-help organization, NXIVM quickly morphed into a sex trafficking ring that exploited vulnerable individuals, including children, for financial gain. Keith's manipulation and control over his followers knew no bounds, as he coerced them into engaging in illegal activities under the guise of self-improvement.
Despite his efforts to evade justice, Keith Raniere was eventually arrested and indicted in 2018 in connection to the heinous activities of NXIVM. He faced federal charges of sex trafficking of children, conspiracy, and forced labor. In a landmark ruling on October 27, 2020, Keith was sentenced to 120 years in prison, ensuring that he would never harm another soul again.
Although his upbringing was marked by instability, Keith Raniere came from a relatively privileged background. His father, James Raniere, was a successful advertising executive in New York City, while his mother, Vera Oschypko, worked as a ballroom dancing instructor. Despite their divorce, his parents provided him with a comfortable upbringing.
In addition to his own criminal activities, Keith Raniere was also implicated in the nefarious actions of former actress Allison Mack. The two collaborated in the systematic exploitation of vulnerable individuals through NXIVM, forming a partnership that would ultimately lead to their downfall.
