Kara Lynn Joyce was born on October 25, 1985 in New York. She grew up with a passion for swimming and began competing at a young age. Her talent quickly became evident, and she set five national high school records while attending Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
After high school, Kara went on to attend the University of Georgia where she continued to excel in the sport. She made a name for herself as a standout swimmer and set numerous records during her college career. In 2006, she made history at the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships by becoming the first swimmer to win the 50-yard, 100-yard, and 200-yard freestyle events in the same year.
Kara represented the United States at the Olympic Games in 2004, 2008, and 2012. Over the course of her Olympic career, she won four silver medals and solidified her place as one of the top swimmers in the world. In addition to her Olympic success, she also won the 4x200 meter relay at the FINA World Aquatics Championships in 2007.
