Jose Guadalupe Posada was born on February 2, 1852, in Aguascalientes, Mexico. From a young age, he had a talent for art and began drawing and sketching at an early age. He showed a particular interest in political cartoons and satire, which would become a recurring theme in his work.
While still in his teens, Posada was hired as a political cartoonist for a newspaper called El Jicote. In the late 1880s, Posada made the decision to move to Mexico City to further his career. Posada's work often featured images of calaveras, or skulls, which are typically associated with The Day of the Dead. He used these images to create powerful and thought-provoking pieces that commented on the human condition and mortality.
Posada was not only a talented artist but also a devoted family man. He grew up alongside his older brother, Cirilo, in Aguascalientes. Later in life, he settled in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico, where he lived with his wife, Maria de Jesus Vela.
Posada's work had a profound impact on the art world, influencing many artists who came after him. One of his acquaintances and fellow Mexican artists, Jose Clemente Orozco, was particularly inspired by Posada's satirical style.
