Jonny Kim, an American U.S. Navy lieutenant commander, former SEAL, naval aviator, physician, and NASA astronaut, was born on May 2, 1984, in Los Angeles, California. His parents emigrated from South Korea to the United States in the early 1980s, seeking a better life for their family. Growing up in South Los Angeles, Jonny's parents owned a liquor store, and his mother worked as a substitute elementary school teacher while raising Jonny and his younger brother.
Despite facing challenges, Jonny excelled academically. In 2002, he graduated from Santa Monica High School and went on to pursue higher education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from the University of San Diego in 2012. Jonny's passion for helping others led him to attend Harvard Medical School, where he obtained his Doctor of Medicine in 2016.
After completing his medical internship in emergency medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in 2017, Jonny's career took a remarkable turn.
