John McKay was born on May 7, 1923, in a small town in West Virginia. His childhood was not easy, as his father passed away when he was young, leaving his widowed mother to raise him and his siblings alone. Despite the hardships, McKay showed promise as a young athlete, excelling in both football and basketball during his high school years.
After graduating from high school, McKay received a scholarship to play football at Purdue University. However, tragedy struck when his mother fell ill, forcing him to drop out of college and find work to support his family. McKay took a job as an electrician's assistant in a coal mine, sacrificing his own dreams to take care of his loved ones.
Despite the setback, McKay never gave up on his passion for football. He eventually returned to college, playing for Oregon State University before beginning his coaching career at the high school level. His natural talent for coaching quickly became evident, and he was soon hired as an assistant coach at the University of Oregon.
McKay's big break came when he was hired as the head coach of the University of Southern California football team in 1960. Over the next 15 years, he transformed the struggling program into a powerhouse, leading the Trojans to multiple national championships and coaching future NFL stars like O.J. Simpson.
McKay's success at USC caught the attention of the NFL, and he was eventually hired as the head coach of the expansion team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Though he faced challenges in his new role, McKay's leadership and coaching expertise helped the Buccaneers become a competitive force in the league.
In 1951, McKay married Corky Hunter, his high school sweetheart. The couple had three children together and remained happily married until McKay's passing in 2001. Despite his demanding career, McKay always made time for his family, instilling in his children the same values of hard work and dedication that guided his own life.
John McKay will always be remembered as one of the greatest football coaches of all time.
