John Kasich was born on May 13, 1952 in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania. He grew up in a working-class family and developed an interest in politics at a young age. Kasich attended Ohio State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science.
After college, Kasich began his political career as a staff assistant to Ohio State Senator Donald Lukens. He quickly rose through the ranks and eventually served in the Ohio State Senate. In 1982, he successfully ran for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he represented Ohio's 12th congressional district for nearly two decades.
During his time in Congress, Kasich gained a reputation as a fiscal conservative and was known for his work on budget and economic issues. In 1994, he played a key role in helping President Bill Clinton pass the Federal Assault Weapons Ban, a bipartisan effort that aimed to reduce gun violence in the United States.
After leaving Congress in 2001, Kasich briefly worked as an investment banker before returning to politics. In 2010, he was elected as the 69th Governor of Ohio, a position he held until 2019. During his time as governor, Kasich focused on job creation, education reform, and fiscal responsibility.
John Kasich has been married twice and is the father of twin daughters with his second wife, Karen Waldbillig. He is known for his faith and has described himself as a "staunch Catholic."
Since leaving office, Kasich has remained active in public life. He has worked as a commentator on Fox News and has written several books, including the New York Times bestseller "Courage is Contagious" in 1998.
