John Henry Bradley was born on October 7, 1923, in Antigo, Wisconsin. Raised by his parents James and Kathryn Bradley, he grew up alongside his four siblings. From a young age, Bradley displayed a strong sense of duty and service, traits that would later shape his life in remarkable ways.
Before entering the military, Bradley had aspirations to work in the funeral business. However, his path took a different turn when he enlisted in the United States Navy. Little did he know that his decision would lead him to become a war hero and an enduring symbol of courage and sacrifice.
During World War II, Bradley found himself stationed on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. It was there, on February 23, 1945, that he participated in one of the most iconic moments of the war. After the first American flag was raised on Mount Suribachi, Bradley and his fellow Navy corpsmen were called upon to assist in raising a larger flag to boost morale among the troops.
The image of Bradley and his comrades raising the second flag was captured in a now-famous photograph that would come to symbolize the resilience and determination of the American military. Despite the intense fighting and casualties on the island, Bradley remained steadfast in his commitment to his fellow servicemen.
Following his service in the Navy, Bradley returned to civilian life, where he continued to embody the values of duty, honor, and sacrifice. He was eventually immortalized in the 1949 film Sands of Iwo Jima, where he portrayed himself alongside Hollywood legend John Wayne.
Throughout his life, Bradley remained humble about his role in the events of Iwo Jima. He saw himself not as a hero, but simply as a man who had done his duty in service to his country. His legacy lives on as a testament to the bravery and selflessness of all those who have served in the armed forces.
John Bradley passed away on January 11, 1994, but his memory continues to inspire future generations to embody the same spirit of courage and sacrifice that he exemplified during his time on Iwo Jima.
