Jim Tomsula was born on April 14, 1968 in Homestead, Pennsylvania. He grew up with a love for football and sports in general. Tomsula attended Catawba College, where he played as a defensive lineman for the Catawba Indians. After graduating, he stayed involved with the team, working as the strength and conditioning coach in 1989.
After his time at Catawba College, Tomsula began his coaching career, starting as a defensive line coach for various teams. In 2006, he joined the San Francisco 49ers as their defensive line coach. His hard work and dedication paid off when he was promoted to head coach in 2015.
Before his time with the 49ers, Tomsula gained head coaching experience with the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe. This opportunity allowed him to develop his coaching skills and gain valuable experience that would later help him in his coaching career.
