On November 24th, 1963, Jim Leavelle was assigned to escort Lee Harvey Oswald, the man accused of assassinating President John F. Kennedy, from the Dallas Police Department's Headquarters. It was during this routine transfer that tragedy struck. As they were walking through the basement of the building, Jack Ruby, a local nightclub owner, shot and killed Oswald in front of Leavelle's eyes.
Leavelle's actions in the aftermath of Oswald's murder would earn him both praise and criticism. Some applauded his quick thinking and bravery in the face of danger, while others questioned why he did not anticipate the danger posed by Ruby. However, Leavelle remained steadfast in his belief that he had done everything in his power to protect Oswald.

Many of the articles of clothing he wore on the day of Oswald's murder are now on display at Dallas' Sixth Floor Museum, a testament to his place in history.
